Dr Z’s Nail Protocol

If you are currently treating your nails for a fungal infection

  • Do not use nail polish on your toenails/take a polish break*
  • Weekly Tolcylen medicated packet soak
  • Daily application of a topical antifungal such as Tolcylen by applying one drop to the base of the nail.
    • Using the brush tip paint the nail folds and gently under the nail, taking care not to apply too much pressure as this can traumatize/lift the end of the nail plate.
  • Weekly file the ends and the top of the nail plate with an emery board, about a dozen times.
      • This works best after a bath or shower when your nails are softer. May also be done after Tolcylen packet soak.
      • Continue as directed per your podiatrist.

If you must paint your nails for a special occasion

Avoid getting a pedicure

Use your own products

We recommend Dr.’s Remedy products**.  Do not leave polish on for more than 4 days. During that time it is advised to continue to use the Tolcylen as above. After your special occasion, remove the polish, file the nails as above, and resume treatment protocol.

If you have been told your nail fungus has cleared

  • Weekly Tolyclen medicated packet soak

If you choose to wear nail polish

  • Dr.’s Remedy products** are advised.  At minimum, apply their base coat, and choose whatever color you like from your own collection or pedicurist.
  • Remove polish after 3-4 weeks
  • File nails as above
  • Take at least a 1 week polish break, applying Tolcylen one drop to the base of the nail.
    • Using the brush tip paint the nail folds and gently under the nail, taking care not to apply too much pressure as this can traumatize/lift the end of the nail plate.
  • At the end of your polish break, file the nails again (top and ends) then apply polish as above.

Tolyclen and Dr.’s Remedy products are available at all West Coast Podiatry Center Offices.
