With everyone on the “running” bandwagon lately, I fear one of the best exercises around is being forgotten: walking!
Walking remains one of the most fun, natural, and inexpensive ways of keeping your feet (and you!) in tip top shape.
It’s the perfect exercise in so many ways. It’s not strenuous, not hard on your joints, it’s relaxing, and you get to go outside in the Florida sunshine! How can you beat that?!
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, walking boasts many benefits. Walking helps control weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. It also improves cardiovascular fitness, and it creates an overall feeling of well-being…it’s a natural stress reliever!
Walking can help you:
- Strengthen your heart and lungs, and improve circulation
- Prevent heart attacks and strokes
- Reduce obesity and high blood pressure
- Boost your metabolic rate
- Favorably alter your cholesterol
- Improve muscle tone in your legs and abdomen
- Reduce stress and tension
- Reduce arthritis pain; stop bone tissue decay
Don’t Forget Your Feet!
Don’t about your feet when starting a walking program though! Wear proper shoes with breathable socks. Trim your toenails so they’re not bumping into your shoes and causing problems. And if you’re diabetic, it’s best to consult with your podiatrist before you start any exercise program!
Now get out there and walk!
