Tom Hanks has Type 2 DiabetesTom Hanks, known for his roles in blockbuster films like Sleepless in Seattle, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, You’ve Got Mail, The Green Mile, and Cast Away, is now known for something else: Type 2 Diabetes

Sharing this news last month on Late Night with David Letterman has caused quite a stir for the mega star. Apparently, the media has jumped all over it and Mr. Hanks is feeling a little embarrassed by all the attention.

Ironically, he made this announcement just one month before National Diabetes Awareness Month…so maybe all this attention isn’t so bad after all! Someone with his level of star power may be able to “shed a little light”on this growing epidemic.

Perhaps he can take comfort that he is not alone. He joins a long list of stars with diabetes, including Halle Berry, Paula Deen, Larry King and Nick Jonas. Type II diabetes does not discriminate, nor does it play fair!

Here are some warning signs to look out for if you’re concerned you may have type II diabetes: urinating often, feeling very thirsty, feeling very hungry – even though you are eating, extreme fatigue, blurry vision, cuts/bruises that are slow to heal, and tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2).

If you are experiencing any of the these symptoms, do yourself a favor and get checked out immediately. It’s always better to get a diagnosis sooner versus later.

If you are noticing anything unusual with your feet or are experiencing ankle or heel problems, Sarasota or Bradenton is the place to be!
