Losing Weight Can Help Your Feet

Dropping a few pounds can do wonders for your feet!

We all know being overweight can affect your health, but did you know if can affect your feet too?

Even as few as 10 extra pounds can lead to added stress for your feet. Some of these problems include:

  • Plantar Fasciitis  is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a tight ligamentous band that runs along the bottom of the foot. Excess weight can contribute to this type of inflammation.
  • Gout is a form of arthritis in your big toe due to high levels of uric acid resulting from a rich, high-fat diet.
  • Diabetes is a condition in which the body does not properly process food for use as energy. This can lead to a whole host of other problems including diabetic foot problems.
  • Collapsing Arches or flat feet can result from excess weight on the arch over time.

In order to avoid these foot problems, either lose weight or maintain a healthy weight for your age and height. But lose weight slowly and carefully, particularly when it comes to exercising.  Aggressive high impact exercise will only exacerbate some of these conditions. Try some low-impact exercises like walking or swimming. And make sure you have properly-fitted and supportive athletic shoes as well.

Remember, even losing a few pounds will lessen the stress on your feet tremendously. Eat healthy, lose weight, and keep moving!
